Communication and Laptop Museum

The Communication & Laptop Museum opened its doors on 10 June 2023. The idea for the museum dates back to 2004, when I was working at Elion. Seeing large amounts of old telecommunications equipment being discarded inspired me to start collecting and preserving this unique part of Estonia’s technological history.

The museum features a wide range of historic telecommunications and computer equipment, including:

  • a telephone exchange from 1969,
  • telephone cross-connect systems,
  • vintage telephones,
  • radio telephones,
  • public payphones and original phone booths,
  • overhead telephone line equipment,
  • postal collection boxes,
  • early laptops and desktop computers dating back to the 1980s.

An extension to the museum building is currently under construction.

The collection also includes original memorabilia, large signs and historic building logos from Eesti Telefon, Elion, Microlink, EMT, Telekom and Hallo stores.

Visitors can explore a collection of hundreds of mobile phones, including early NMT mobile phones. On display are also a 3G outdoor base station, mobile antennas, a 13-metre mobile phone mast, SIM cards, as well as promotional items and souvenirs from telecommunications companies.

Why should you visit the Communication & Laptop Museum?

Do your children know what telephones looked like before the era of smartphones?

Can they use a rotary dial telephone?

Do they know what your very first mobile phone looked like?

Do you know what a 2G, 3G or 4G antenna looks like – the technology that provides the signal to your mobile phone?

Have you ever sent or received a fax? Or do you remember what a pager was?

The museum also features a fascinating collection of vintage laptops and early personal computers.

Located in Mustahamba village, Rõuge Parish, Southern Estonia, the museum offers a unique and nostalgic experience for visitors of all ages.

Everyone who has made the short 12-kilometre journey south of Suur Munamägi has left delighted. Whether you are young or old, you’ll discover nostalgia, fascinating stories and plenty of memories waiting to be shared.

We look forward to welcoming you!
