The Vabamu Museum of Occupations and Freedom
The meeting place of generations
Vabamu, the Museum of Occupations and Freedom, located in the heart of Tallinn, presents the recent history of Estonia during and after the occupations. It describes the story of the restoration of the independence of the Estonian Republic and the preservation of freedom through various lives and fates.
Stories about Estonian mothers and fathers, grandmothers and grandfathers have been collected in Vabamu. Their fates help us all to always value justice and freedom.
The Vabamu building itself, which was the first building in Estonia specially constructed for a museum continues the theme of the exhibitions: the walls of the building are made of glass to offer visitors the freedom and transparency that was missing during times of occupation. The museum can be entered through a small birch grove to remember the people who died as a result of the actions by the occupation authorities.
Visitors of all ages are welcome. The museum offers an educational and playful family area. It consists of three parts: activity corners, a guided activity sheet, and an e-guide. The e-guide is suitable for children aged 6–12.
The exhibition is accessible to people with hearing, visual, and mobility disabilities.
The museum was nominated for the European Museum of the Year Award in 2020.
