The Under and Tuglas Literature Centre of the Estonian Academy of Sciences

The Under and Tuglas Literature Center fulfils the wish of the writer

Wouldn’t it be exciting to look around the home of a leader of Estonian cultural life, while the landlord himself is walking in the garden under the pines of Nõmme? This is the feeling the Under and Tuglas Literary Center of the Estonian Academy of Sciences wishes to offer you. Both regular visitors and researchers are most welcome.

The museum of the Under and Tuglas Literary Center is located in the house built by the writers, Artur Adson and Marie Under, in the Nõmme district in 1933. In 1944, the family fled to Sweden, and another couple, Elo and Friedebert Tuglas, who lost their home in the war, came to live here. This couple stayed in Nõmme until the end of their lives. In 1971, the Friedebert Tuglas Museum was established in the house, and it was opened to visitors for Tuglas’s 90th birthday in 1976.

The museum houses treasures from Elo and Friedebert Tuglas’s book, and a photography, manuscript, and art collection from Artur Adson and Marie Under, including from the period of their exile. It also houses the art collection of the Estonian Cultural Foundation in the United States and the collection of art by literary critic Paul Reets.

The Museum of the Under and Tuglas Literary Center fulfils Friedebert Tuglas’s wish that both a serious researcher immersed in the archives and a wide-eyed literary lover could feel welcomed there – like coming to visit a home full of spiritual treasures where the owner has just left for a short walk under the pines of Nõmme.
