The University of Tartu Museum
Discover the secrets of the Cathedral!
The University of Tartu Museum, located in the former Cathedral (the Dome) at Toomemägi, displays the history of the University of Tartu, the stories of students through generations, as well as the history of science and art.
So, what is this “university spirit” all about? Is it the wisdom of professors, colorful student life, or gloomy loneliness and endless love? The permanent exhibition, The University of Our Lives, introduces the history of the University of Tartu and the stories of its alumni. For example, you can test your knowledge about student corporations, spin the wheel of historical facts, and figure out how calculations were done in the 17th century by using devices like Napier’s bones. You can also watch videos in which well-known university alumni and scientists share vivid memories of their alma mater. In addition, you can explore detailed models of former student housing.
At the permanent exhibition What is Light? Professor Friedrich Parrot’s Physics Lab you can get acquainted with the scientific equipment from G.F. Parrot’s cabinet, which is the most valuable part of the collection of the University of Tartu Museum. You can also explore various stylish and unique two-hundred-year-old scientific instruments in their full authenticity.
The Chamber of Mysteries is located on the sixth floor of the University Museum, where curious visitors can discover the seven secrets of the Cathedral. The exhibition was awarded as the best permanent exhibition in Estonia 2022 and was nominated for the European Museum of the Year Award 2023.
