{"id":9022,"date":"2023-01-27T08:02:24","date_gmt":"2023-01-27T06:02:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/muuseumikaart-ee.vserver.zonevs.eu\/museums\/long-house-of-the-hiiumaa-museum\/"},"modified":"2025-05-21T18:07:23","modified_gmt":"2025-05-21T16:07:23","slug":"long-house-of-the-hiiumaa-museum","status":"publish","type":"museums","link":"https:\/\/muuseumikaart.ee\/en\/museums\/long-house-of-the-hiiumaa-museum\/","title":{"rendered":"Long House"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-el\"><strong>The longest house tells the stories of the islanders of Hiiumaa<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-el\">Pikk Maja, or \u201cLong House\u201d located in K\u00e4rdla, Hiiumaa, presents the history of the island through a collection of Hiiumaa Museums, and the stories of the islanders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-el\">The main building of the Hiiumaa Museums, Pikk Maja, is a former dwelling house, where the managers of the Hiiu-K\u00e4rdla wool factory lived until the middle of the 20th century. The factory, which produced high-quality woollen cloth, was destroyed in a fire during WWII, but the residence survived and is popularly known as The Long House. Built between 1830 and 1840 this over 60-meter-long building is the longest wooden house in K\u00e4rdla.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-el\">During the Soviet period, the building housed several government institutions, including the Department of Education and a library. The Long House was also where wedding ceremonies were carried out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-el\">There is one permanent, and several small temporary, exhibitions in the museum, which are visitable throughout the year. There is also a playroom for young visitors.
